I contemplated for a long time whether I should show Gergerger evolving or not, but I figured it was better this way to start things off with a multi-part battle with the true Rival of this region. I hope everyone enjoys Galamel and Kursmoke. I’ve been told my second stage evolutions were the best, and I agree, as with most other actual starter Pokemon. I’d go into more detail about these two, but there’s not much I have to say about FIth gen Pokemon at this point, so I’d rather focus on the trainers. Either way, have fun with this week’s set of comics y’all!

For this comic to work we have to assume that gym badges aren’t required for using HMs out of battle. Figures that out of everything I had to make sense of in the Pokemon universe the thing that has me stumped is people needing a permit to use their Pokemon for reasons other than violence. Also, this joke is totally not stolen from a friend of mine’s. It’s completely my own idea and no one else’s. I am most definitely not going to link you to to TV Tropes in order to further explain this joke.
Everyone say hello to Bogmore, the evolved form of Lumore. It may seem odd to skip the pre-evolved form, but there’s actually an interesting story behind that. You see, Lumore evolves by evolutionary stone, and so does Flameingo actually. Our little swamp monster here was initially going to trigger a stone event that would’ve taken up a few parts, but ultimately had to be cut. This leaves us with Lass being an even bigger showoff by catching a fully evolved Pokemon, but unfortunately, we’re left without Flameingo’s evolution, which is a bit of a letdown, but not as big a loss when you hear his evolution’s even more cringe-worthy pun name, Falcano. For now though we can enjoy the happy fishing moment and more small filler comics.
Yes, I’ve come up with all eight gym leaders and even the Elite Four for this nameless region. Yes, I had plenty of fun coming up with them and their unique traits. No, none of them will be appearing in this comic aside from our young dragon trainer here.
I hope this one’s not too hard to follow. I’m certainly enjoying these simpler comics after this story’s big start. I could’ve easily cut all this and the Lass subplot out and probably be done by now, but where’s the fun in telling a story if you don’t include at least a little bit of filler and jokes in it?
I noticed a lot of plotholes are fixed once you realize that your average Lass comes from a wealthier family than your typical small town Pokemon Trainer. They tend to wear fancy school uniforms, use cute domesticated Pokemon, and I’m sure those who are better off can afford some nice gear that utilizes Pokeball technology to stuff their luggage into their pockets. Unfortunately, the concept of taming wild monsters is about as foreign to them as buying pets from a store is to PT. This leads to some dangerous curiosity, and Smokey the Ursaring urges you to think before you do anything dangerous.
I realized very quickly how boring and unoriginal it would be to just have one trainer poking fun at Pokemon game mechanics, so I decided early on to include another human character. I know I probably could’ve saved myself about 6 or so comics by cutting Lass out of the story, but I’d rather keep this than the other things I had to cut. I’ll try to make her worth the extra week we spent introducing her. Besides, it’s not Pokemon without any Shipping Fodder.
If you thought my forests were sub-par, then welcome back to my poorly drawn city backgrounds! You might also be disappointed by the lack of battle scenes, but for once that’s not a cut. I never was one for drawing action, let alone stuffing them properly into a comic, so the Pokemon battles were something I never planned to show much of. I think seeing what happens after the fights are much more fun. Why can’t we all just get along?
There’s also the fact of adding two new Pokemon to the number of cameos here for a single panel, which seemed like too much of a let down for me. As badly drawn and unoriginal they are, my Pokemon ideas are special to me, and I wouldn’t want to show one off for one screen and ignore it for the rest of the story. You’ll have to wait till I get around to all that Concentrate stuff. The real shame is having to leave Flameingo on the sidelines again. Poor thing. He’ll get some well earned screen time soon enough though, so don’t feel left out you fans of flaming birds. There’s plenty in the actual games to keep you busy until then.
One minor joke that got removed was a comic where Gergerger learned Razor Leaf after some grinding, but Pokemon Trainer could only find weak bugs that faint from the slightest thing. That led into this scene where PT uses Roazor Leaf on an actual foe for the first time and is surprised to see a Super Effective Critical Hit. Since 9 panels are easier to work with than 10 though, I had to cut out his shocked reaction (it’s identical to his other “Eep” faces so no big loss there) and I guess the joke works better with Gergerger randomly learning a new move in some way. Finally, a cut that works. Too bad I don’t have the second gym badge, so I can’t use that cut outside of battle.
It was real fun thinking up all the typical trainers PT could run into throughout his journey, but once again, cut for time. Luckily we managed to see the iconic Hiker and Lass trainer types show up and it was pretty fun trying to come up with original looking designs for them while still sticking to traditional looks. Well, at least it was fun for Lass, Hikers all tend to look mostly the same. Also, I think I now know why they always have their eyes closed…
A minor detail, I noticed a couple errors in this comic after it was finished. Pokemon Trainer’s keychain keeps going from one triangle on it to two. Also, Lass’s sweater isn’t properly inked in the last panel. I’d fix this, but I’m sure there’s plenty more minor details I overlooked so far, so I’ll take this opportunity to include the entire Pokemon Adventure arc in my ever growing counter of bananas.
